These are the three most expensive houses ever sold in Australia
There’s no question that property is one of the biggest assets a person could have. It goes without saying, then, that while most properties will probably be a little pricy, some almost break the bank.
The most recent Demographia International Housing Affordability Survey found that Australia ranks as the third least affordable country for housing, with buyers spending up to almost 13 times their annual income to buy a home. But the following three properties truly take the cake. These are the three most expensive houses ever sold in Australia.
#3 “Phoenix Acres”, 38B The Crescent at Vaucluse, Sydney – $67 million
Sold to an unnamed Australian family in December of 2017, Phoenix Acres fetched a whopping $67 million, making it the third-most expensive property ever sold in Australia and the most expensive waterfront property ever sold in the country.
Phoenix Acres is a 3,731 square metres residence with 81m of water frontage, a private boathouse and jetty facilities, and views of Sydney’s skyline and the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Add to that a large pool area, a central gazebo, and “his” and “hers” change rooms, and you’ve almost covered all the so-called “millionaire must-haves”.
The home has been described as Australia’s Versailles, and has six large bedrooms – all en suite, and the main bedroom has two en suite bathrooms – a dining room, conservatory, study, library, lounge, and English-inspired pub and a grand rumpus room (that is an entertainment or a games room, in case you’re unfamiliar with the term).
#2 “La Mer”, Vaucluse, Sydney – $70 million
When James and Erica Packer sold their Vaucluse mega-mansion for about $70 million in 2015, the sale set a new Australian house record. And while $70 million sounds like a lot of money, the sales price only just recouped costs that were undertaken to acquire the property, as the initial acquisition of the property was said to have cost $30 million, whilst construction cost $40 million.
La Mer consists of a six-bedroom main residence with underground parking for 20 cars, two self-contained staff quarters under a rooftop lawn and lap pool, and various large entertainment spaces. The subterranean space surrounding the main residence was designed by Tzannes and Associates, and the entire estate spans 3,300 square metres.
#1 “Elaine”, Point Piper, Sydney – more than $71 million
After 126 years of continuous family ownership, the Fairfax family sold their estate in Point Piper for more than $71 million in April 2017. Located on Seven Shillings Beach, the 6,968 square metre estate known as Elaine was sold after a three-year sales campaign.
Elaine was built in 1863 and the three-storey mansion has lawns that slope down to the beach, five-century old trees, sandstone paths and walls, and a grass tennis court.
Elaine is considered to be a landmark in Sydney Harbour, and is one of very few privately held harbourfront estates.
