High-rises and beachside living
Southport’s name was derived from it being the southernmost port of the colony of Queensland. Originally known as Nerang Creek Heads, Southport is presently recognised as the central business district of the City of Gold Coast – a far cry from its humble beginnings as the site of timber mills. It is a lively coastal suburb with a large student population, due to its proximity to Griffith University.
The outdoors reign supreme here, with many footpaths, bikeways, playgrounds and parks, and the Seaworld theme park is always a popular destination for locals and tourists alike.
A number of public and private schools can be found in Southport, and the sideshow theatres of yesteryear have made way for an impressive amount of multicultural eateries that will blow any foodie’s mind.
Facts about Southport
It stems from my Australianisms and belief that everyone is a fundamental cog in the wheel.

– Due to the abundance of hardwood used to make boomerangs, the native Aboriginal people used to refer to the Gold Coast as Kurrungal.
