Kick back with coastal living
Home to almost 17,000 residents, Maroochydore is an urban centre and major commercial area in the Sunshine Coast. Its name derives from the Aboriginal Yuggera language word “murukutchi-dha”, which means “the place of the red-bill”, a black swan that is indigenous to the area. The town was established in 1903 and the first coastal hotel opened in 1912, although exploration in the area had already commenced in 1842.
Today, the area’s 10 schools has made it popular among young families, and a quarter of the population attend an educational institution of some kind – including the nearby University of the Sunshine Coast.
The mouth of the Maroochy River gives residents a chance to unwind with fishing and kite surfing, and the largest shopping centre on the Sunshine Coast, Sunshine Plaza, has a great many culinary options for the hungry, and entertainment options for those who are (as unimaginable as it may seem) feeling bored.
