Relax, you’re in Cottesloe
Known for its swimming, surfing and snorkelling, Cottesloe Beach is located just 14km from the Perth city centre. The Cottesloe Road District was established in 1895, although the first reported visit by Europeans was much earlier, in January of 1697, when three Dutch ships arrived under the command of Captain Willem de Vlamingh.
Cottesloe officially became a town on 1 July 1961, and has since blossomed into a popular beach destination for the residents of the city of Perth all year round, thanks to its moderate climate.
Today, Cottesloe is a pine tree-lined haven filled with a variety of multi-storey apartments, renovated heritage houses, townhouses and Art Deco flats, and is an architectural and geographical gem along the coast.
Facts about Cottesloe
“I know when I’ve been surfing I’ve got a sense of level of calmness to me, and when I hit the ocean, even in its presence, at the shore, and especially by a powerful surf, I’ve been put in my place as a person.”
– Nick Carroll
– With the construction of the Cottesloe jetty in 1906, came decency laws, which stated that bathers over the age of 6 should be clothed “from neck to knee”. Swanbourne nudist beach was established quite a few years later in 1961, and is still a popular beach among bathers who prefer the option of not wearing any clothes at all.
