The second oldest capital city in Australia
The beachside suburb of Hobart is located a 12-minute drive south of Tasmania’s capital city, Hobart. Originally named Brown’s river (after either the Scottish botanist Robert Brown, or the convict Dick Brown – speculation about both are rife), Kingston was officially proclaimed in 1851, after which it was developed as a fruit growing area – visit the Huon Apple and Heritage Museum for more about this part of Kingston’s history – and later as a holiday village for summer and weekend getaways.
Like the rest of Tasmania, Kingston has four very distinct seasons. Sunbathing on the beach in summer and building snowmen in winter is entirely normal here.
Today, Kingston is popular among young families and many local workers, as well as quite a few that commute to nearby Hobart. Just over 10,000 residents call Kingston home, and its natural splendour, combined with the modern amenities, six public and private schools and a golf course and sporting complex make it the ideal suburb for people of all walks of life.
