Food and festivities in New Farm
Just east of the Brisbane CBD on a large bend of the Brisbane River, lies the suburb of New Farm. Not surprisingly, this multifaceted suburb used to be a farming area – only the second farming area in Brisbane, to be exact. Captain Patrick Logan established a farm in the area in 1827, and it is thought that it was also used as a site for working with limestone. Gentrification throughout the 1990s and early 2000s has turned New Farm into a suburb characterised by easy and low-maintenance living.
The heritage-listed New Farm Park has been a place for locals to unwind or to get active since 1914 – free tai chi and the adventure playground are always popular attractions here.
At the eastern end of the park, what used to be the electric tramway power station has been converted into The Powerhouse – a community arts and performance space that will have culture buffs raging. Go and see everything from visual arts exhibitions, community festivals, live comedy and music acts.
Visiting the Farmer’s Market that is held in the vicinity is also a must, as is a visit to one of the many cafes and eateries in Little Italy. Getting around in New Farm is as easy as taking a stroll or grabbing a bicycle from the CityCycle bike hire network.
