Waterworks Road paved the way
Similar to many neighbouring suburbs, Ashgrove is now found on what used to be farmland. When Waterworks Road was laid down along a traditional Turrbal pathway that led to Mount Coot-tha, it literally and figuratively paved the way towards the establishment of a suburb in its own right.
Once all available land was sold in 1875, schools were quickly established in Ashgrove, and the tramline was extended to connect Ashgrove with the rest of Brisbane.
In the early post-war period, Ashgrove became known as Nappy Valley due to its many young families, and not much has changed since. Ashgrove is a popular suburb for families and singletons alike – the fact that it’s only about 4 kilometres from the Brisbane central business district doesn’t hurt either.
Ashgrove is a cosy, leafy and hilly suburb with a traditional feel, and its numerous parks, sporting grounds, restaurants and other forms of entertainment will ensure that this suburb remains a sought-after place to make a home.
Facts about Ashgrove
“The future is not some place we are going to, but one we are creating. The paths to it are made, not found, and the activity of making them changes with both the destination and the maker.”
– Phillip Adams
