This confectionary delight was first made by the French chef Armand Galland, after running into trouble when he had to serve unexpected guests of his patrons, Lord and Lady Lamington. Galland whipped up the cake with day-old French vanilla sponge cake from the pantry, coconut and chocolate, and the treat became a hit. Galland named the lamington in honour of his patrons.
  2. 32.2% of Brisbane’s population were born overseas, making the city a multicultural and diverse metropolitan melting pot.
  3. Brisbane has the fourth-highest median income of all Australian cities, and 92.6% of its inhabitants are employed.

Architecture in Brisbane

Perhaps one of the most interesting architectural stories of the city of Brisbane, is a story about the opera. Built between 1871 and 1882, the city’s reservoir operated until it was ultimately shut down in 1962. The Underground Opera Company stepped in and refurbished the old reservoir, adding seating, lights, power, ventilation and steps. Today the reservoir is open to the public to view live opera performances.

After the Sydney Harbour Bridge, the Brisbane City Hall was the second-largest construction project in the country. Its observation platform on the 92m high clock tower which provides the ultimate vantage point of the city.

Speaking about views that will take your breath away: the Jacques Cartier Bridge follows the same general design concept as the Quebec Bridge in Canada, and was the design influence for the Story Bridge, which was completed in 1940.
