Architecture in Sydney

Sydney’s architecture can be described as a juxtaposition of styles from the last two centuries, with both historical and modern structures gracing the skyline. British architectural development started in Sydney shortly after 1788, but it wasn’t until 1810 that Sydney really started to develop. One of the best-known stories about Sydney is the relationship between then-Governor Macquarie and convict architect Francis Greenway. Together, they oversaw the building of the Hyde Park Barracks, St. James Church, and the famous Macquarie Lighthouse.

From there, Sydney continued to progress, and new buildings and real estate in every architectural style were added as these developed. The 1830s brought eclectic neo-Gothic real estate to what was often described as “Sin City”. Like most of the world, the decades following the 50s concerned itself predominantly with style and luxury. This can be seen in the Victorian influence of James Barnet’s Customs House and The Australian Museum.

Planning for the iconic Sydney Opera House already started in the 40s, with construction based on the designs of Danish architect Jørn Utzon beginning in 1959.

Modern real estate in Sydney

It is well known that Sydney has some of the highest real estate prices in the world, with some statistics suggesting it might even be more expensive than Paris or New York. Prices to the east and north of the city centre are especially steep.

According to a 2016 census, Sydney had about 1.8 million private dwellings. Apartments made up about 28.1% of these, with about 57% being separate houses.

While residents of Sydney seem to prefer larger detached houses, recent years have seen an increase in denser living conditions and this has created an increase in the demand for apartment and townhouse real estate.
